Random 5 Friday

1. We got our FIRST EGG this week!
It wasn't laid in the nesting box but in the coop, right near the feeder. This has continued all week now. Not good. Doesn't she know how much trouble we went through to build a proper labor & delivery ward?

2. Isn't this cute material? I made nesting box curtains out of it but so far they have not encouraged our wayward girl to give birth in privacy. Hmph!

3. The scissors are solid cast iron and heavy. They were made in Germany more than 60 years ago and my mother always used them for her sewing scissors. Woe to anyone who dared use them for any other purpose! Except my dad. He used them once but that's a story for another day.

4. My oldest is in his first full-time semester of college and loving it. Of course, it just started on Monday but he has two very cool Art classes in 2 and 3 dimensional design. His supply list was daunting. Can you say coupons?!

5. Oh yeah! Did you know that Chick-fil-a has a Mocha Cookies and Cream milkshake?! It is sooooo delicious. It tastes just like coffee and ice cream....YUM!!!

Do you have a favorite milkshake flavor?

Hop on over for some more Random 5 Friday fun at A Rural Journal.

  3. Fun material. My Mum had a pair of scissors just like those ... I wonder where they are? !! Silly chicken ... maybe she doesn't like green?!!!! The first year of college -- a new adventure -- art classes! Wonderful! That milkshake sounds delicious ... and added 5 lbs just reading about it! ;) Fun 5.

  4. I think my mum had a pair of scissors like that when we were kids. I don't think she was quite as possessive of hers though and they are long gone. Congrats on your first egg! I like a cookies and cream or a mocha milk shake myself. Here in New England we call them frappes because milk shakes don't have ice cream in them here. It's strange. My nana and I once got into an argument about it. I wonder if she had scissors like that.

  6. I quit going to Chikfila this year when they changed their menu and took off the salad that had the corn and bean relish. I loved that. I protested.

My mom had sewing scissors that no one could touch, too. I think she still has them. I need to ask.

How ungrateful you chicken is!!! She needs to go to gratitude classes!!!

  7. I love it when they first start laying. We introduced some new layers to our existing flock six weeks ago, and now they have started to lay, my goodness, the interesting places we are finding eggs! Hopefully they will settle into the nesting box routine soon :)

  8. Congrats on the egg!

My mother wouldn't let us use her sewing scissors for anything else either. Glad your son is liking college. The art classes sound great! I wish I had taken an art class or two. I didn't think I'd be any good at it, so I didn't try.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  11. Congrats on that egg. Gosh I can't understand why the chicken doesn't appreciate the lovely nesting box, that material is very pretty.
Good luck to your son at college. Art is a great field.
Cool scissors. Cast Iron is very heavy. We have a couple of cast iron frying pans and I can barely lift them. Never imagined scissors would be made of it. Would love to hear the story of your dad using them.

  12. How interesting about the birthing room, and love the curtain fabric. I UNDERSTAND about the scissors, I have similar rules.

  13. That's wonderful material! I love gingham. My grandmother had 3 gingham aprons, and one of them was this color. :)

My husband has used my sewing scissors to trim our rose bushes! Men! Lol

  14. Congrats on your egg! She'll figure it out at some point.

I'm the same way about my sewing scissors - my hubby better not touch them!

  16. Those scissors have cut many a cloth! Milkshakes -- yum! Your flavor sounds delicious. Chocolate is my favorite, but I did love the boysenberry shakes at Foster Freeze. Got all I wanted free when I worked there during college. And I could eat them without gaining an ounce way back then!

  17. We don't have any Chick-fil-a's around here.. But a Mocha Cookies and Cream milkshake sounds fantastic!
Smiled about those great scissors.. we were never allowed to use my mom's fabric scissors. And I now have my own pair of fiscars labeled "FABRIC ONLY."
We're still waiting on our first egg from our spring pullets. My sister, who hatched them out in an incubator with her kids, sent me a message the other day, saying the first of that big batch of chicks they hatched has layed it's first egg at her house. So any day now!
The college art classes sounds so dreamy to me.. but I can imagine the shopping for supplies was something else! I took one college art class, many years ago, and the supplies were so expensive!
