Random 5 Friday

1. There are just some strange things out in the country! While driving down a road we had actually never been down (GASP!)  my husband and I came upon this building at a commercial chicken house. No matter how cute it is, I still feel sorry for the chickens that are housed in the upper buildings. I could never be a commercial chicken keeper. Never. And before you ask, Yes I buy chicken in the grocery store. But that's not what this comment is about. That's for another day :)

2. I'd better get out and take pictures like a mad woman. I'm pretty sure I won't be getting out for awhile after I have foot surgery. I certainly won't be able to drive :(

3. Needles in the ankle hurt. Badly. 'Nuff said.

4. When my husband went down to the chicken coop the other morning (it was still dark) to open the door from the coop to the enclosed area, there was a skunk. Thankfully, it didn't spray! But now we have to set the trap again and try to catch the stinky bugger. Can I just say...eeeeew!

5. If you could hop in a time machine and go anywhere...

Where would you go?

  1. I hope your foot surgery goes well! I broke my foot in February, and it did slow me down. I hope you won't be too restricted for too long.

I feel sorry for the chickens, too.

I'd only get in a time machine if I was guaranteed to be able to come back. :-) Maybe I'd try out the 1940s. Or the early 1900s.

  2. Good luck on your surgery and a speedy recovery. Cruelty or mistreatment of all of our animals is totally unjustified- If I had a TRADIS I'd want too much, and aside from all of the wonders of the world periods I'm going to choose time with my ancient relatives-Vikings and North American (Canada) Native Indians-maybe sneak a lunch with a Pharaoh.

  3. Best of luck with your foot. That sure is an interesting chicken house! Wow - anywhere in a time machine? Hmmmm - I don't know - little house on a prairie? Is that too boring?

  4. Good luck w/ your surgery!

Have you seen Food, Inc? Totally horrific those chicken house conditions. We raise a bulk batch once a year (25-50) and process them ourselves once they are grown, and stick them in the deep freezer. I haven't bought chicken at the grocery store in ages.

  5. Oh no on the foot surgery -- I hope it goes well.

Time machine? There are a few bad decisions I made in my 30s I'd like to re-do. :)

  6. Love discovering another of those brand-new-to-us old country roads, don't you?

And I do hope that this surgery solves your woes ... and that you'll be up dancing and walking and doing your thing before too long, Anne!

  7. i wonder how you get a skunk without them spraying (trapping them that is)? either way it sounds a bit iffy.

time machine? let me see - the Roaring 20's, or the time when Drive-In Movie Theater 1st started up, so the hubby & i could go & see a film in a convertible. that would be awesome!! also when ladies got to wear those big puffy dresses, i would enjoy just putting on one for a bit, & taking to dance or get around. horse & buggy times. you have gotten my brain a wandering ... i love time traveling. so fun!! 8. That is a cute photo, but not a nice place for chickens. Good luck with your foot surgery. Time travel ... gosh ... I don't know! Good luck with the skunk.

  9. Rapid healing . . . Hey! You could always take pictures of your foot resting in different spots . . (well, i would think it was fun.)

I like the chicken house photo - and, i agree about the chickens . 'nuff said. STILL - it's a great & quirky photo. love it.

Time Travel? That's a good one . . . nope, can't think of an era I'd rather try - Plenty of places I'd like to see, though . . okay, well - you've got me thinking.

    Be Well!

  10. Good Luck with your ankle and up coming foot surgery, Anne.

Skunks are NOT fun. Every year we have one that sprays in the calving barn, during calving season. Glad your Hubby didn't get sprayed.

  12. Hope all goes well with your foot surgery and that healing is quick. I think I would like to go back to the 50's...life seemed to be a little simpler then.

  13. Oh wow! Everyone has such interesting places they want to go, even if you want to stay in the here & now! I would go back to Jane Austen's time, Regency England but only if I could come home when I got tired of it ;)

I hope and pray everyone has a safe and blessed weekend! I'm off to see the grands...

  14. I do love that giant chicken! How fun! But I definitely agree on the sad conditions in commercial farms. After I got my chickens four years ago it led me to research more into commercial farming and what I found led me to be a vegetarian. I know it's not for everyone, but for me it was the only choice.

If I could hop in a time machine and go anywhere...good question! The first thing that comes to mind is traveling back in time to see my mother. She passed away when I was five and I don't have many memories of her. Everyone tells me how amazing she was that I wish I could see it for myself.

  15. I always identified with Scarlett O'Hara so I guess I'd have to travel back to the plantation and check out Rhett Butler in person.

  16. I am so crazy about the time I have lived in that I can't imagine being anywhere else. But, on the other hand, things have gotten so out of hand in the last few years that I'm not too crazy about those years of my life. So, I guess I'd say 1940-70.

  17. I'm very glad that sknunk didn't spray!! I will have to give some thought as to where I would go in time. I'm pretty content where I am for the most part.

  18. I've been in commercial poultry houses and that's why I spend the extra money for organic or naturally raised, no drugs added chicken.
My time machine...back to before Dave died...the best days.

  19. Oh no, you're having foot surgery? No fun! I enjoyed your random 5's and I'm so glad your hubby didn't get sprayed by the skunk :) Let's see, if I could hop in a time machine I would probably travel back to the 1800's. Hugs!
