Quiet Time

I was thinking the other day about when our children were little, I would have them lay down each afternoon from 1-2:30pm. When they were very young it was nap time. As they grew older it became quiet time. They needed this hour and a half each day to settle down, regroup, and rest. Naturally they balked about having to do this until they reached a certain age. Then they couldn't wait! It meant uninterrupted reading time, or just playing with a toy without little brother wanting it.

Come February, we will only have one child living at home, and he is almost an adult. In fact, he will be in March. You would think that leaves plenty of 'quiet' in the home, and it does to a certain extent. But the quiet I am talking about is different. It's intentional, which was my One Word for 2014. While I failed miserably many times and should have been more intentional in my words, writing, and worship, I feel like just having chosen the word made me more aware that I needed to be intentional about these things. So in that respect, it was a success.

As 2015 begins, my one determination this year is going to be a daily quiet time with a nice cup of tea. I want to find rest in the Lord as found in Psalm 131:1-3:

O Lord, my heart is not proud, nor my eyes haughty;
Nor do I involve myself in great matters,
Or in things too difficult for me.
Surely I have composed and quieted my soul;
Like a weaned child rests against his mother,
My soul is like a weaned child within me.
O Israel, hope in the Lord
From this time forth and forever.

 I just love that picture of a child resting against its mother. I remember doing this with my mom. I felt safe, protected, and shielded from harm but most of all I felt loved. My own children did this many times and I know the contentedness I felt when they did. Imagine how our Father in Heaven must feel when our soul rests in Him!

I want to make sure I take time each day to absorb the stillness of a moment; to compose myself and rest in quiet peacefulness.

I wasn't even going to choose a word this year but it just came to me while writing this post; quiet-like. :)

Soooo....

My One Word for 2015 is Quiet.

How about you? Do you have a daily quiet time? If so, what do you do; read, nap, or something else?

  1. Dear Anne, my mouth feel open, literally, when you revealed what your word for the year was!
    "Quiet" is my word this year too.
    I have never heard of having a"word" for the year until I began blogging, but thought it was a terrific idea.
    I love your reasoning for the word quiet and may do the same in the way of resting quietly some time during the day.
    But,I will be applying the word "quiet" to speaking. I find as women we tend to feel as though we need to be speaking, especially in a crowd and I am finding that not to be so. Many times just listening has a greater effect on digesting a conversation.
    I love to talk, but God is gently and graciously working with me in that area.

    Thank you for the encouragement here today as we begin a New Year with new desires of our hearts.

    Sweet blessings, Debbie

    1. Hey Debbie, We can share the same boat because my mouth sort of fell open when I read your comment! I thought I was choosing a strange and unlikely word but I guess not. I can see how I might need to incorporate your application into my year. I am the same way. I feel like I need to say something, when in fact I need to listen.

      Until last year, I had never chosen a word to focus on throughout the year. An author friend encouraged me to do so, and with some trepidation I finally did. But like I said, just having chosen the word, many many times throughout the year I was reminded internally to be intentional about certain things. It didn't always happen but I think as a whole, it did help me at times.

      Best wishes for a 'quiet' 2015!

      I have been perusing your blogs this morning and loved seeing all the fellowship and delicious foods in your life. I must make time to show more hospitality this year, too.

  3. Happy New Year, Anne! I wish you the very best throughout 2015.

    I am a person that needs my quiet time too. I get up early to drink coffee and read blogs. I enjoy a good walk outside whenever I can and am not afraid to take a nap when time allows. It‘s important to do those little things that help us be our best selves.

  9. Anne, this post went straight to my heart. The older I get, the more I crave my quiet time...the world is such a loud place! If I were to have a word for 2015, I do believe it could most definitely be QUIET as well. Sometimes just taking a few moments to watch the birds can do so much for my spirit :) Happy New Year!

  10. Thank you for visiting me at the Irish Garden House . . .
    We have plenty of snow foryou if you want to make the drive to get some.
    I suggest a large semi to hold it!
    Today's lakeshore prediction, 12 inches.
    When it snows, IT SNOWS . . .
    When it doesn't it doesn't, like for our GREEN Christmas.
