Welcome to Stuff & Nonsense, Kathy! I am thrilled to
have you here today and know my readers enjoy getting to know you.
Hi, Anne! Thank you so much for welcoming me to your lovely blog home. I’m excited to be here
and look forward to interacting with your readers.
Tell us a little about
yourself and your writing journey.
I’m a caffeine addicted introvert, which means I get really
brave when I’ve had a few cups of coffee and make social commitments that later
make me want to hide. LOL But being a
writer is perfect, because most of my social engagements are fictional.
I started this journey when I was in middle school and full
of romantic ideas of how my life would be, and how the world works. Naivete and
growing pains are close cousins, and I believe my stories have benefited from lessons
learned. It has taken me decades to realize my dream of publication, but the
long and winding road has been indispensable to understanding God’s ways,
character growth arcs (mainly mine) and happily-ever-after endings.
Tell us about your
book and why you wrote it?
My novella “Love Brick by Brick” is essentially every little
girl’s fantasy of marrying a rich, handsome international man of mystery. No,
not Austin Powers, but the hero is British. The collection features stories of
Christmas during the Victorian Age, but I set mine stateside, in my hometown in
upstate NY. Rufus Sedgwick is the grandson of an earl, a” veteran” of the
Crimean War, as in a lay-chaplain to the soldiers. He has moved his mother and
his entire estate—brick by brick—to relocate after certain events have left
them devastated. Perhaps the new start will lead to happiness for his poor Mum,
and if the fates allow, for him too…
The heroine, SarahAnn Winnifred, has never taken time to
dream of anything but what her academic skills can achieve for her, least of
all marrying a handsome gentleman of pedigree. She’s a real worker bee, a
no-nonsense doctor in training. But when her favorite little orphan friend
wishes for a King and Queen to adopt her for Christmas, SarahAnn sneaks in a secret
wish, too. Will her longings be the Christmas dream come true for everyone?
This story sort of wrote itself, as I sought to combine
several elements of Victorian Christmas lore and local history. It surprised
and delighted me as it unfolded, seat-of-the-pantster writer that I am. I hope
my readers feel the same.
What do you think
makes a good story?
I love to read romances where the characters are fleshed
out, and not cookie cutter figures stuck into a predictable plot. I like
surprise twists, a splash of humor, a tug on the heartstrings, and a deep sigh
with the happily ever after. I also love secondary characters who steal scenes.
For historical fiction, a strong and authentic sense of setting is a must.
Where is your
favorite place to write?
In my husband’s recliner, surrounded by cats and with
Pandora radio playing. Yes, I am the crazy cat lady of Breesport. Thanks for
asking. 😉
Do you ever wake up
in the middle of the night and just have to write down a thought? If so, do you
keep a tablet on your bedside table or go to the computer?
I have in the past, but I always woke up my poor
long-suffering saint of a husband, so I abandoned the practice. But inspiration
ALWAYS strikes at night, doesn’t it? If I get a really good thought, I open my
phone on the dimmest light setting and jot a reminder in notes. And hold my
breath so I don’t wake up my husband.
Do you talk to your
characters? Keep story boards or boards on Pinterest?
Hi, my name is KATHY and I’m a Pinterest Addict. I have
boards for everything from period clothing to the kind of animals my characters
have loved. My characters are so real to me I could talk to them, but that
would just be crazy, right? (haha crazy. Who, Me?)
Can you give us a
glimpse into your next book or story idea?
I have two books out right now (is this a theme about crazy
or what?) and my next project is the sequel to the Civil War romance that
launched Aug 2. Book Two in Sons of the Shenandoah series is already written,
so it is in the edit and cover selection process. I hope to have it out in
January.
In Book One, The Abolitionist’s Daughter, you meet twin
brothers Ethan and Devon Sharpe, cavaliers in every sense of the word. Impulsive
Devon feels his control slipping over his brother, so he tries several tactics
to secure Ethan’s loyalties, one of which is setting Ethan up with the new
preacher’s daughter, Ellen White. Poor Ellen does not have a very happy
outcome, and I felt she deserved a chance at happiness in the sequel. The twins’
older brother, Gideon, serves as an artillery captain at the Citadel, so he can
be near his Charleston cousin Leigh Anne. Two years into war Gideon finds
himself a widower with baby girls, wounded—and landing in the care of none
other than Ellen White. Poor Ellen. She has to go through a bit more rough
handling from a cavalier Sharpe before she arrives at anything resembling
happy. But thank goodness, she’s got enough moxy to handle the most stubborn of
the bunch.
In your spare time,
do you have any hobbies you enjoy?
Did I mention Pinterest?
Oh, I did? Okay well, then there’s painting, cooking, baking, crafting,
drawing, gardening, cats, dogs, (yes, my husband and I should be building an
ark with all the pets we have) and marketing. Oh, and reading. Hmmm, when does
sleep fit into my day, anyway?
Do you have a
favorite book? What makes it stand out from others?
Burning Sky by Lori Benton. So many things… it’s set in upstate NY, which
I love because I typically set my stories in NY. It has a hero who loves his
dog, even if he does toss insults at him. (I’m sure they are affectionate and
deserved. What is a “wee little
gomeril”?) Benton handles depth in a way that’s effortless—senility,
disability, kidnapping, hardship, orphanhood, yearning, shared grief and
trauma…and still manages to write a winsome and uplifting story with a
beautiful romance. It scores a perfect ten on every level.
Ack! Only one? That’s positively spartan. I have at least
ten. Okay, coffee. But no promises that I won’t be ornery without chocolate,
Italian meatballs, quesadillas, fried whole clams from Maine…. Good bread….
Apple pie….

ReplyDeleteHappy to host you, Kathy! Thanks for the fun interview. 😁
DeleteWhat a great interview Anne! . . . and I already have "The Abolitionist's Daughter" in my Amazon cart! My husband and I have talked for years about going to the U S Open Tennis Tournament in New York. I would love to give him that trip (with me along!). rmaney(at)firstarpchurch(dot)org
ReplyDeleteThanks, Rebecca! I dont' play tennis but have always thought it was fun to watch. I hope y'all get to make that trip someday!
DeleteHey, Rebecca thank you for commenting and especially for getting my book. :-) Now I feel like a bad New Yorker… I had no idea there was like some big tennis match here… Too funny. But if you ever do come up this way, stop by Elmira and I’ll give you the grand tour
DeleteI would take my children somewhere special like Legoland! 🙂
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance.
smincer10 (at) gmail (dot) com
Hi Susanne, I think Legoland sounds like a fabulous place to visit!!
DeleteHi Suzanne, Legoland is awesome. My son took his kids to the one in Philadelphia. I guess they have more than one around the country. That sounds like an awesome gift for any aged son. :-)
DeleteIf money and time were not an issue, I would take my family to several countries. First would be England, since we found out that some of our ancestors are from the souther region. Then we would visit Ireland, Scotland, Switzerland, Spain, Italy and a few other places! lol Basically, we would tour that whole area. We found several ancestors from Europe. jumpforjoy at gmail dot com.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking we're related somehow,Joy! I have many ancestors from that region too. And you know we have soooo much in common! 😁💕
DeleteYes, I think so too! We need to sit down and talk more family history, one day! Maybe we won't bore kids to sleep. haha :)
DeleteThat's a wonderful gift to wish to give, Joy. Who wouldn't absolutely love to tour Europe? I hope you get to take that trip one day.
DeleteI'd take all my extended family on a cruise!
ReplyDeletecolorvibrant at gmail dot com
I've never been on a cruise but it sounds fun! Take me to the Bahamas 😎
DeleteHi, Heidi. How fun, another travel wish! They say the things most people regret in life are the ones they didn't do. God made a beautiful world, and it would be awesome to get to see a little more of it.
DeleteI would take my family on an Alaskan cruise. mauback55 at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteHi, Melanie. I'm with you. Alaska sounds intriguing. I've always wanted to see the big wildlife like moose, Kodiak bear, and wolves in the wild. And the scenery... yes, that would be some kinda trip.
DeleteMy MIL has been to Alaska and said it is spectacular! It would be an amazing trip. Long years ago, my husband wanted to move there. I'm not a fan of long term cold weather though :-)
DeleteIf I could travel back in time, I would like to visit the Victorian era in America and I would buy a beautiful piece of Victorian jewelry for my sister and myself.
ReplyDeletediannekc8(at)gmail(dot)com
Hi, Dianne. What a fun imagination! And how sweet of you to think of your sister.
DeleteI have been putting together a Pinterest page of Victorian era fashion, and the hat pins and hair combs are stunning. People still collect those. The Victorians made everything so beautiful!
Dianne, yes!!! That would be an amazing time travel destination, or maybe Regency England. BUT, I want to be above stairs, not below!!! hehe
DeleteI adore Pinterest and have two boards for Fashions of the Past.
I would buy my son a house. fishingjanATaolDOTcom
ReplyDeleteJan, that is the sweetest wish. He's a lucky young man to have a mom like you.
DeleteThat's precious, Jan!
DeleteI would purchase a Harley for my brother, a new car for my mom and I'd go to Israel.
ReplyDeletepsalm103and138atgmaildotcom
Ooh, three wishes. That's the way to do it! It's so much fun to dream. I think as adults we don't give ourselves permission to imagine like we did as children, but it expands our understanding of our impossible-way-making God. Sometimes He allows us to live out those dreams. Sometimes he places those dreams in our hearts because he intends to fulfill them.
DeleteDreams keep us striving to live a full life for God's glory, if we are Believers. Love your dreams, Caryl!
DeleteSo I learned something new about you! I had no idea that Burning Sky was your favorite book! So to answer your question what would I buy? Not an easy answer to that one, but, I think I'd like to go back to the CW and purchase Ulysses S. Grants sword and present it to the best crit partner a writer could have.
ReplyDeleteCan I time travel with you? LOL that sounds like fun. Thanks for coming by DebbieLynne. You’re the best crit partner anyone can have so I’ll buy you a Scottish castle Haha!
DeleteAwww...that is so sweet!!! I love seeing LOVE for another in action. I want to time travel with you, Kathy and live with you, Debbie Lynne! haha!!! Scotland would be amazing but then again, I have GOT to be above stairs. I abhor ironing and sweating. ;-)
DeleteI would purchase a trip for my hubby to go see his mother. He doesn’t like to fly because of ear issues and driving so long hurts his legs. So time travel would be great! Or a train ride so we could see the country as we go see her.
ReplyDeletepaulams49ATsbcglobalDOTnet
Paula God bless you and your husband. I hope you are able to make that trip.
DeleteI love reading all these sweet ideas that people want to do for others. You all have such a kind hearts.
I sure hope y'all get to go see his Momma. I don't think we ever get too old to want to do that. I would love to take a train trip as long as the ground was relatively straight and flat. I've longed to do the one through the mountains of western NC but I don't think I would do well going around the edge of the mountains. Heights tend to do me in. Ha!

ReplyDeleteSorry, I hit "publish" before I was finished. Great interview! Kathy, I totally agree on your criteria for a good story and especially historical fiction. I want to be able to trust that the author has done good research. To answer your question, I would pay off the mortgages on my daughters' houses and buy them each a new car. That would be so fun! I'm looking forward to reading The Victorian Christmas Brides Collection. Do not enter me in the drawing as I have already won a copy of this book on Debbie Lynne Costello's blog--Thank you, Kathy!
ReplyDeleteAw, Kay. Your daughters must be wonderful girls. What a practical and generous wish. I hope you all have a very joyous Christmas season.
DeleteHi Kay, I'm sure you have trusted authors that you know have done their homework. It always pulls me much deeper into the story and makes it even more enjoyable knowing the history is real. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. Congrats on winning a book on Debbie Lynne's blog. I love her!!! She is such a sweet lady. :-)
DeleteI love Lori Benton's books! My daughter and I were able to meet her last fall when she was in our area. My "roots" are so deep (And, go so far back.) in New York they'll come out. I love upstate New York, too!
ReplyDeleteOh, wow, Beverly. So cool that you got to meet Lori. What a thrill!
DeleteAnd I didn’t realize you were from NY. Small world!
Hi Beverly, I love it when I get to meet a favorite author. I met Beverly Lewis early in 2017 and it was wonderful. She is the most genuinely kind lady I think I have ever met.
DeleteIf money and time travel were no object, I would get my husband a trip to the Holy Land for Christmas. Thanks for the giveaway! kwyrzy[at]hotmail[dot]com
ReplyDeleteKathy, now that’s a trip I can admire. Hope you both get the chance to go. Thank you for commenting. Good luck in the drawing!
DeleteThat would definitely be a dream trip for us too! I sure hope y'all get to go one day.
DeleteWonderful interview. If time travel were not an deterrent, I would go back to 2012 and give my mom a last Christmas together that none of us would ever forget.
ReplyDeleteOh, Claudia! I feel for you. My mom's birthday was Christmas Eve and our family misses her so much. She's been gone 17 years and the holiday always feels a bit melancholy without her. May God lift your hearts this Christmas!
DeleteClaudia, I forgot to mention that you need to come back and leave your email address if you want to be entered in the giveaway here on the blog for the paperback copy of the book. Thanks!
DeleteThat’s such a beautiful sentiment Claudia that I relate to completely. I know your email.
DeleteIf money was object I would first treat my daughter and 4 year old granddaughter to a trip to Disney World the week after Christmas. I would then plan another trip or two during next Spring Break and Summer Vacation.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your giveaway.
Blessings!
Connie
cps1950(at)gmail(dot)com
Connie, That would be a great trip! We took our girls and son to Disney when they were young. It's a tiring day but fun.
DeleteWhat a great trip to plan. My kids were in their teens before they got to go. Interestingly enough we had set aside our tax return money so that they could go with their older brother who was married by then. Little did we know my mother would pass away just before the trip. I’m glad they still were able to take vacation. I think it helped them through their grief
DeleteWaving at Kathy!!! Great interview! You are a wonderful author!!! And Critique partner too!!! Big hugs!
ReplyDeleteCarrie, you have been a guiding light on my journey and I’m so grateful to have met you. I can’t say enough congratulations on the Maggie award! :-)
DeleteThanks for stopping by to say Hi! And I second Kathy's congrats on the Maggie Award!!! :-)
DeleteGreat interview Kathy and Anne!
ReplyDeleteI'm not entering the contest, popping in to say hi Kathy. I enjoyed your story.
Blessings, Tina
Thanks for stopping by, Tina! Hope your weekend was grand.
DeleteWaving at you Tina. Thank you for coming by. And I am so grateful for your lovely review. You are a blessing!
DeleteAnne, what a tremendous week this has been visiting with your readers and in being a guest here. You are lovely and gracious hostess! I truly appreciate the interview and review. Congratulations to Joie for winning the contest.
DeleteThank you to everyone who came by and shared from their heart. I hope all of your fondest Christmas wishes and dreams come true!
