Review ~ Fairest of Heart (Texas Ever After #1) by Karen Witemeyer

Bethany House Publishers, June 2023
352 Pages, Paperback

About the Book

Beauty has been nothing but a curse to Penelope Snow. When she becomes a personal maid for a famous actress whose troupe is leaving Chicago to tour the West, she hides her figure beneath shapeless dresses and keeps her head down. But she still manages to attract the wrong attention, leaving her prospects in tatters--and her jealous mistress plotting her demise.

After his brother lost his life over a woman, Texas ranger Titus Kingsley has learned to expect the worst from women and is rarely disappointed. So when a young woman found in suspicious circumstances takes up residence with the seven old drovers living at his grandfather's ranch, Titus is determined to keep a close eye on her.

With a promotion hanging in the balance, Titus is assigned to investigate a robbery case tied to Penelope's acting troupe. The evidence points to her guilt, but Titus's heart divines a different truth--one that might just get Penelope killed.

An enchanting Western take on the classic Snow White fairy tale, Fairest of Heart will sweep you away from once upon a time to happily ever after.

My Review 5 STARS!!!

Of all the fairytale retellings I have read, Fairest of Heart is by far my favorite! Witemeyer, in my humble opinion, has raised the bar in this genre.

I felt as if I was transported into the re-release of the first fairytale I ever saw on the big screen in 1967. I can remember the excitement of seeing the characters come alive and as then, today my attention and emotions were fully engaged with Penelope, Titus, Doc and ALL of the old drovers, aka the graybeard brigade, at the Diamond D Ranch. They played across my mind’s eye with ease, bringing great affection for this well written re-telling.

At the same time, I thought it was brilliant to have several POV instances from the seductive villainess Narcissa LaBelle. Boy howdy, she is wicked to the core. Witemeyer perfectly describes her cunning mind and conniving ways. I could not wait to see how Ranger Titus Kingsley was going to catch her and what a great sting it was!

With fabulous descriptions of…well…everything, I can see this becoming one I reread many times! Of course, no one writes western quite like this author so when a beloved classic fairytale meets a pen like Witemeyer wields, it is bound to become a classic in its own right among Christian fiction fans. Truly, the faith thread was so well done for both Penelope and Titus, and their romance is as delectable as apple cider.

I received an early copy of the book from the publisher through Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review. No compensation has been received.

Have you read any fairytale retellings? If so, let me know in the comments.

Review ~ The Heart’s Charge | Hanger’s Horsemen 2 | Karen Witemeyer

For Years They've Been Nomads for Justice, but a Final Mission May Just Lead Their Hearts Home.

Members of the legendary Hanger's Horsemen, Mark Wallace and Jonah Brooks arrive in Llano County, Texas, to deliver a steed, never expecting they'd help deliver a baby as well. Left with an infant to care for, they head to a nearby foundling home, where Mark encounters the woman he nearly married a decade ago.

After failing at love, Katherine Palmer has dedicated her life to caring for children, teaming up with Eliza Southerland to start Harmony House. Eliza understands the pain of not fitting society's mold, being illegitimate and of mixed ancestry. Yet those are the very attributes that lead her to minister to outcast children. The taciturn Jonah intrigues her by defying all her stereotypes of men, but there are secrets behind his eyes--ghosts from wars past and others still being waged.

When the Horsemen hear rumors of missing children, they stay to investigate, sticking close to Harmony House and its beautiful owners. As they work together to uncover the truth, love and danger grow hand in hand until a final sinister scheme threatens to destroy them all.

My Review ~ 5 STARS!!!

Witemeyer is on my list of not-to-be-missed authors. In The Heart’s Charge, the character that resonated over and over with me was Jonah. Oh, the others are superbly written because, helloooo, it’s Karen Witemeyer, but there is just something about Jonah—the hardships he has overcome and not been embittered by—that makes him exceptional.

As a Horseman, Jonah has a physical presence that is quite intimidating to those who don’t know him. I could easily picture his tall stature and confident stride (or sitting a saddle) with a touch of arrogance. But he also has an intelligence and sensitivity that sees beyond the exterior to interior motives and emotions. He is quietly observant with a crackerjack sense of humor and is absolutely the perfect match for Eliza Sutherland! Their tension on the page is palpable, and the banter so much fun!!!

This has become one of my favorite series by this author. Not only will you laugh out loud but you’ll feel as if your own heart has been lassoed by these children and their plight, and that just might have you shedding a tear or two.

If you enjoy historical fiction interlaced with strong faith and sweet yet heart galloping romance, then do grab a copy of The Heart’s Charge today!

Pssst…I also recommend reading the first book, At Love’s Command, because…again…it’s Karen Witemeyer. J

My Review
4 STARS!!!

Fans of Witemeyer have anxiously awaited this new series and will not be disappointed in the first book at all! I know I sure wasn’t. At Love’s Command is filled with adventure and romance on a whole new level. Hanger’s Horsemen has some pretty intense drama swirling around these ex-Cavalry men.

Matthew Hanger is a tough guy. He has to be as their leader. And there’s a code all leaders follow. “Protect your men. Complete your objective. Ignore the rest.” That has some pretty heavy ramifications later on. To see Matthew work through emotional hurts and regrets was quite a moving experience. He knows the saving grace of Jesus Christ and yet he struggles, as we all do.

Josephine Burkett is quite a forward-thinking woman for her times, being a doctor and all. She’s had to take a bold stance in order to begin carving out a place for her medical practice. When unforeseen circumstances bring Matt and his men to her door, it was fun to watch two forces collide without knocking each other out. *wink*

Plenty of excitement, both dramatic and romantic, fills the pages of At Love’s Command. Overall, I highly enjoyed the story and look forward to the next book.

I received an electronic copy from Netgalley and the publisher with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are my own.

My Review
5 STARS!!!

‘He wanted to throw open the cellar door and let all his secrets escape so her light could shine into his dark places. Yet at the same time, he wanted to padlock that door shut and never risk her disappointment.’

Zach's past and his struggle in the present really touched me. I cried through one particular scene. Witemeyer really makes the characters come alive on the page. More Than Words Can Say might be one of the most descriptive books I’ve read so far this year. I mean listen to this:

‘This wasn’t how the evening was supposed to go. He and Abby were supposed to be sitting on a blanket by the creek, eating fancy hotel food, and sharing kisses. Not standing in the middle of an emotional briar patch, confessing secrets that held the power to destroy everything they’d built.
Yet in the midst of that poisonous bramble, a gentle hand alit on his arm, and his barbed surroundings retracted some of their thorns.’

Wow. An emotional briar patch. Can’t you just see it? All those ‘thorns’ (lies from the enemy) poking and prodding and drawing blood? How many of us can relate to this?? I’m telling you, Witemeyer has outdone herself with this story. And the scene doesn’t stop there. It gets even better because once the truth comes out then Abby has a choice of how to respond, either with condemnation or gentleness, just like we have that same choice when someone shares deep pain with us.

I highly recommend reading both books so you get the full measure of Zach and his beautiful patchwork family! More Than Words Can Say is a fantastic story filled with drama, wit, and love. Fans of historical fiction with a strong redemptive theme will enjoy this book.

My Review

I enjoyed this story! The prologue drew me in and made me cry so I knew it was going to be a good one. Zacharias, Seth, and Evangeline--three orphans who form a patchwork family--tugged on my heartstrings until I felt like I was a character in their story.

All of the ugly words and mean looks Evangeline has endured through the years from superstitious, or just down-right rude, people because of her eyes being two different colors hasn't colored her view of humanity. I liked how she was always gracious living out her Christian beliefs under trying circumstances.

Her brothers are great too, super protective of her but at the same time give her room to discover what she wants in life. As it turns out, that would be Logan. He is a man seething with anger and out for revenge because he thinks Evie's oldest brother, Zacharias, cheated Logan's father out of their home place. He has a plan to get it back but then he meets Evangeline and over time her sweetness and love for the Lord begins to work its way into his hardened heart. And oh, the romance!
Witemeyer stepped it up a notch with one of the most romantic scenes I have read in a long time.

A bonus in this book is the brother Seth, who ends up with a romance of his own. That was another well done surprise. I felt like it was almost a two-for-one. Big brother Zacharias takes the stage in the next book and I am looking forward to reading his redemption story. He was my favorite character in More Than Meets the Eye.

This is a Christian historical fiction book that will bring fans hours of reading enjoyment, as it did me. I was gifted a copy of the book from the publisher. I was not required to write a review. No compensation has been received.

Review ~ Heart on the Line (Ladies of Harper’s Station, #2) by Karen Witemeyer

Published June 6th 2017 by Bethany House Publishers
Grace Mallory is tired of running, of hiding. But when an old friend sends an after-hours telegraph transmission warning Grace that the man who has hunted her for nearly a year has discovered her location, she fears she has no choice. She can't let the villain she believes responsible for her father's death release his wrath in Harper's Station, the town that has sheltered her and blessed her with the dearest friends she's ever known.

Amos Bledsoe prefers bicycles to horses and private conversations over the telegraph wire to social gatherings with young ladies who see him as nothing more than an oddity. His telegraph companion, the mysterious Miss G, listens eagerly to his ramblings every night and delights him with tales all her own. For months, their friendship--dare he believe, courtship?--has fed his hope that he has finally found the woman God intended for him. Yet when he takes the next step to meet her in person, he discovers her life is in peril, and Amos must decide if he can shed the cocoon of his quiet nature to become the hero Grace requires.

My Review
4 STARS!!!

Dependable can sometimes seem like a dull word but in this case it means anything but. Witemeyer is a dependable author. By this I mean her stories always can be depended upon to model utmost moral character while at the same time exhibiting the most charming romance. I find this a refreshing attribute. I never have to worry that the latest narrative might contain anything of an objectionable nature. Therefore, I highly recommend any of her books but especially Heart on the Line.

Amos Bledsoe didn’t strike me as a swoon worthy hero in the beginning. He is not your quintessential tall, dark, and handsome man. But what Amos ‘lacks’ in physical hero qualities, he more than makes up for in his character. By the end, I absolutely adored him! He is witty, brave, staunchly in love with Grace, and willing to put his heart on the line. J What more could a lady ask for?

Grace Mallory is hiding out in a small women’s colony after witnessing a tragic event. I liked her character but didn’t really connect to her in any way. The lady who did capture my attention was Helen. With a prickly pear demeanor and an air of mystery surrounding her, I found her fascinating. Helen’s love story is secondary to Grace’s, but stole the show, in my opinion.

“She glanced at the sky, where a handful of puffy white clouds swam lazily across the bright blue expanse. So peaceful. Perhaps even happy. Helen didn't really know what happiness felt like. To her, it was simply the absence of pain. Yet when she looked at a sky like this one, something inside her whispered that there could be more. There could be joy that led to dancing, to laughter, to a place where fear could not penetrate.” (Witemeyer, pg. 100)

There is a prequel novella, Worth the Wait, and the first novel, No Other Will Do. Although Heart on the Line is the second full length book in the series, it can be read as a standalone. Fans of historical fiction with strong Christian values, mystery, and romance will enjoy this book.

I received a print copy from Bethany House for review purposes. I was not required to write a positive review. No compensation has been received.

Review ~ Full Steam Ahead by Karen Witemeyer

About

When love simmers between a reclusive scientist and a wealthy debutante, will they abandon ship or is it full steam ahead?

Nicole Renard returns home to Galveston, Texas, to find her father deathly ill. Though she loves him, Nicole's father has always focused on what she's not. Not male. Not married. Not able to run Renard Shipping.

Vowing to find a suitable husband to give her father the heir he desires before it's too late, Nicole sets out with the Renard family's greatest treasure as her dowry: the highly coveted Lafitte Dagger. But her father's rivals come after the dagger, forcing a change in Nicole's plans.

After a boiler explosion aboard the Louisiana nearly took his life, Darius Thornton has been a man obsessed. He will do anything to stop even one more steamship disaster. Even if it means letting a female secretary into his secluded world.

Nicole is determined not to let her odd employer scare her off with his explosive experiments, yet when respect and mutual attraction grow between them, a new fear arises. How can she acquire an heir for her father when her heart belongs to another? And when her father's rivals discover her hiding place, will she have to choose between that love and her family's legacy?
:  :  :

My Review

Full Steam Ahead is one of my favorite books that Karen has written. It will make my Top Ten this year.  It’s filled with fascinating history regarding steam engines, lots of daring adventure, and her trademark humor woven in with a beautiful message of faith.

Darius’s singular dedication to finding a much needed solution to huge problems in the steam engines is an admirable quality. I hurt for him, that he was so weighed down with guilt from the riverboat accident. What will ever free him from these feelings?

Nicole is an amazingly strong character whom I found to be quite believable. Knowing she is ultimately protecting her family by stealing away with a treasured family heirloom, she is unafraid to face travelling alone and the dangers that await her wherever she goes. She is a woman with a dilemma.  Her father needs an heir so she must find a husband immediately. Will she find the solution to her problem?

All of the characters, from Nicole and Darius, to her parents and his family, are complex three dimensional characters. I absolutely loved the reclusive scientist plot line, the greedy evil doer after the Lafitte Dagger, and Jacob. Who is Jacob, you ask? Well, you will just have to read the book to find out. I hear he gets his own story in 2015!

Review ~ A Match Made in Texas: A Novella Collection

In Dry Gulch, Texas, 1893, a young woman with a tender heart that longs to help those in need takes it upon herself to meddle in the affairs of three acquaintances who are in dire straits. Wanting to stay anonymous, she relies on unusual methods to hire men and women of good character who she thinks can solve the problems facing her "targets." How was she to know that her meddling would turn into a cupid's arrow? And what will she do when her friends turn the tables on her with a matchmaking scheme of their own? Four novellas in one volume. Bethany House Publishers, Jan 2014

My Review

A Match Made in Texas: A Novella Collection brings together four of historical fiction’s finest story tellers. There’s some matchmaking going on in Dry Gulch, Texas and life will never be the same for eight of the most fun characters I have read about in a novella collection in a long time.

A Cowboy Unmatched by Karen Witemeyer brings the youngest Archer brother, Neill, into the path of  Clara, a lady who desperately needs a husband. Well, Neill’s not looking to get married and little does he know that someone in Dry Gulch has sent him right into the path of his future  bride. Their love blooms amid trying circumstances that pulled at my heartstrings. This is a sweet story laced with Karen’s trademark faith and humor.

An Unforeseen Match by Regina Jennings is a poignant tale of two people who are scarred in different ways and each feels unlovable. I literally couldn't put this story aside. I was compelled to continue on and find out what was going to happen between Grace and Clayton. At times I chuckled at Clayton’s sense of humor and then I would turn right around and feel deep sorrow for Grace. Of the four stories, this one impressed me the most with how ordinary the characters’ situations were, and yet completely relatable, even today.

No Match for Love by Carol Cox was a fun and fast-paced read. Lucy Benson is about to go on the adventure of a lifetime. Andrew Simms is looking to hire a companion for his aunt, whom he thinks is getting a might delusional. Let me tell you, Aunt Martha is not crazy and Lucy is just who she and Andrew need in their lives. All of these characters were so full of life, they jumped right off the page and into my heart.

Meeting Her Match by Mary Connealy reveals who our matchmaker is and it was a complete surprise to me. This story brings together Hannah and Marcus, former classmates who haven’t had too much to say to each other in a long time despite living in the same town. A little different than the other heroes in this novella collection, Marcus is rather shy around Hannah. That endearing trait brings about some great laughs of the good kind. Mary is a master at making me imagine that inner dialogue a character has with themselves and Michael is a hoot! But then, so is Hannah. This was a great wrap-up to my visit in Dry Gulch, Texas and I look forward to future collaborations between these authors. At least I hope they do!

I think fans of Christian historical fiction will enjoy these four stories. Not knowing who the matchmaker is brings a fun element into play and adds a nice touch of mystery. I received a copy of the book from author Karen Witemeyer and Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my review. No other compensation was received.

GIVEAWAY & Review ~ Stealing the Preacher by Karen Witemeyer

~ Giveaway has ended ~

If you need a pick me up and a few hours of diversion from the stresses of life, grab a copy of Stealing the Preacher. You'll find plenty of humor laced with in-depth spiritual themes.

This is my favorite book by Karen so far. Crockett is a great character. I loved how his thoughts were communicated, showing his struggle to tame his tongue in obedience to the Lord. He sort of carried on a conversation with himself at times, and it was so real! I find myself often thinking I would like to say one thing but knowing I shouldn't and then apologizing to the Lord for thinking it.

Joanna wants to see their local church revived and has been praying for a preacher. Crockett is on his way to interview for a position as a Preacher in a town nearby. Silas, Joanna's daddy decides to resurrect an old profession to bring his baby girl a birthday present. Her daddy is hilarious! Along with his old gang members it was easy to picture them roping Crockett and dragging him around. There's this one part where he gets away and runs...oh wait. You'll have to read it and see what happens next. Belly laughs galore!

*texture for background from Brenda Clarke

Karen is a master storyteller and her ingenuity is incredible when it comes to dialogue. There is never a slow moment in this book. Her relationship and knowledge of spiritual concepts jumps right off the page but not at all in an offensive or overdone manner. This is a sweet, fast-paced, and funny romance that leaves me anxiously awaiting her next book.

Fans of Historical Fiction and Karen Witemeyer will love this story! Actually, I think anyone would love this story, it's that good :)

I was provided a copy of this book from the author for review purposes only. No other compensation was received. I was not required to write a positive review, only my honest thoughts about the book.

Bethany House is offering a copy to one of my blog readers. Answer the question below to be entered. Please leave an email address so I can contact you if you are the winner. US ONLY!!! Ends July 30th.

What's your favorite Karen Witemeyer book?

Book Blurb

A cowboy who wants to be a preacher. An outlaw's daughter who wants to change his mind.

On his way to interview for a position at a church in the Piney Woods of Texas, Crockett Archer can't believe it when he's forced off the train by an outlaw and presented to the man's daughter as the preacher she requested for her birthday. He's determined to escape--which would be much easier if he could stop thinking about Joanna Robbins and her unexpected request.

For months, Joanna had prayed for a minister. A man to breathe life back into the abandoned church at the heart of her community. A man to assist her in fulfilling a promise to her dying mother. But just when it seems her prayers have been answered, it turns out the parson is there against his will and has dreams of his own calling him elsewhere. Is there any way she can convince Crockett he ended up right where he was supposed to be?

With her signature blend of humor, history, and lively western romance, two-time RITA Award finalist and bestselling author Karen Witemeyer delivers a Texas love story sure to steal your heart.
