Lazy Birds

American Goldfinches have been more prevalent this week. I was hoping to find a feeder for them and the smaller birds so the food would last longer. The bigger birds (Cardinals, Blue Jays, Cowbirds) are wiping out the food in a couple of days!

I went out and purchased a tube feeder specifically for finches and a bag of special finch seeds but they are not interested in trying to work for their food.

They like this feeder that is easy access.

Bunch of lazy birds!

My son has been telling me there was this huge bird in the yard. This big guy, a Brown Thrasher, was coming around but I never saw him. My son managed to snag this shot yesterday. It's not great with the bird feeder pole in the way but it was the best of the two before he flew away. He likes to eat the spilled seeds and leftovers from the feeder above.

What kind of feeders do you use? Any recommendations for the smaller birds?

  1. Hi Anne! My husband just added a tube feeder and thistle seed for the goldfinches last week. He hung it under our plexiglass feeder he built that has black oil sunflower seeds they all like. Especially the cardinals and SQUIRRELS, so added a baffle tin surrounding the pole. (We still have one squiggle that has figured out how to get up there!) Thursday it snowed 6.5 inches here and they were busy, busy in the morning before the storm arrived. Last Wednesday ~ last week ~ 81 degrees! We so enjoy our bird feeder from our table, in back, and the smaller enclosed feeder in front. Rather novel how the squirrels try to get a seed out hanging on the top so they don't touch the bar to trip the door shut. Kathleen ~ Lane Hill House

  6. Anne, I made a few of my own sunflower seed bird feeders that the finches really like. If you search on my blog for "feeder," you should find it. Or, I can send you the link. Let me know.

  7. Beautiful images, Anne. I have several different feeders. The goldfinches I get don't mind working for their food from the tube. Do you use the thistle in it?

    1. Hi Marissa, I don't think I bought any Thistle. Just a bag that has teeny tiny seeds and says it's for Finches. Will try thistle though and see what happens. I moved the feeder far away from the other one in hopes they would start using it but so far, no such luck.
