Pink Perennial

 Isaiah 40:8
The grass withersthe flower fadesbut the word of our God will stand forever.

I don't know about you but sometimes I forget what I buy in the garden dept. This perennial wasn't blooming when I bought it. The tag (I know I should have saved it) had a lovely colorful image of it in full bloom. I was completely and utterly in love with it so I bought it.

On a long and delicate stem sits this lovely pink bloom. It's had a few of them sparsely on the plant but definitely not the profusion that I remember being on the tag.

The whole plant has a wild and free flowing look to it, swaying gently in the coastal breeze.

My question to all y'all gardening friends is...

What is it??

If you have any idea, I would love to hear from you in the comments.

I hope your summer gardening is off to a good start.

Blog Hop & Guest Post + Giveaway ~ Debbie Lynne Costello, author of The Perfect Bride

The Perfect Bride

Avice Touchet has always dreamed of marrying for love and that love would be her best friend, Philip Greslet. She’s waited five years for him to see her as the woman she’s become but when a visiting lord arrives with secrets that could put her father in prison, Avice must consider a sacrificial marriage. Philip Greslet has worked his whole life for one thing—to be a castellan—and now it is finally in his grasp. But when Avice rebuffs his new lord’s attentions, Philip must convince his best friend to marry the lord against his heart’s inclination to have her as his own.

Debbie Lynne Costello has enjoyed writing stories since she was eight years old. She raised her family and then embarked on her own career of writing the stories that had been begging to be told. She and her husband have four children and live in upstate South Carolina. She has worked in many capacities in her church and is currently the Children's Director. Debbie Lynne has shown and raised Shetland Sheepdogs for eighteen years and still enjoys litters now and then. In their spare time, she and her husband take pleasure in camping and riding their Arabian and Tennessee Walking horses.

Listening for God’s Voice
by Debbie Lynne Costello

Do you ever feel like everything you do is an effort? As much as I love writing, there are times in my life where the words just don’t want to flow. That’s what happened with this novella. It was contracted a year ago. I thought I have plenty of time! But I also decided to get it written early because I knew my life was going to get busy.

A year ago my daughter got married. The beginning of the busyness—but good busyness. Then we took a trip to Maine to see our son, daughter-in-love and grandpups —more good busyness. When we got back home we were full steam into building our new house and all the stresses that go along with that—good and bad busyness. Now when I say we are building, WE are building. We do most of it ourselves. Now I’m not the brain behind this, that would be my husband, but I am great at following directions so when he
says drill holes and pull the wires through them, I can do that! Then there were 2 trips to Houston to MDAnderson for Joe to get his PET scans. (For those of you who don’t know about my hubby, he was diagnosed with Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL). God sent us to MDA in Houston for a clinical trial for 5 months and healed him!) My daughter got a job down in Charleston so that meant she was moving and taking my grandbabies—bad stress!

It seemed like one thing after another kept me busy, or kept me stressed and kept me from my story. So now I was into the holidays. When they were over I said I HAVE to get this book written. I sat down and still it wouldn’t come. Now it is February and we were scheduled to take another mission trip to Haiti, and then 4 days after getting back, go back out to Houston again (we have to go every 4 months). I prayed and asked God to give me the words. Haiti came and went, Houston came and went and I still only had about 1/3 of my novella written.

My prayers were sincere prayers. I want God to be in every book I write. I want Him to direct each word I type. But I couldn’t hear Him speaking. It wasn’t until
I just stepped back and quit trying so hard—allowed myself to relax and listen to God—took the time to Thank Him for all the blessing we have here in this country—praised Him for the beauty He created—that the words just started to flow and God gave me my story. Sometimes we have to step back from the busyness of life, whether it is good busyness or stress and just listen to what God is trying to say to us. He is there. He is trying to communicate with us but sometimes we allow the noise of life to drown out the beautiful voice of God.

How about you? Do you find that sometimes you are caught up in the noise of life and miss God speaking to you?

Jazzing up a Napkin Holder

I love searching for items I can use in our home to make it feel more welcoming! Several months ago I came across this wooden fish shaped napkin holder in the thrift store. Even though it's pretty as is (it's made out of beautiful Koa Wood from Hawaii with detailed engraving for the fins and eyes), I wanted to give it a little pizazz for my table decor.

Keeping the project simple, I gathered up supplies of Liquitex, Mod Podge, crumpled Tissue Paper, Sand Paper, Paint Brushes and White Spray Paint.

I started out by roughing up the finish using *extra fine sand paper so that my spray paint would adhere better. After wiping off the powdery residue, I spray painted all of the napkin holder except the bottom. Gotta be able to sit it down to dry ;-)

Once dry, I applied Liquitex using my sponge brush, one side at a time and then carefully pressed each piece of tissue paper onto the surface, leaving a little bit hanging over the edges. This was kind of tricky as it wanted to keep sticking to my fingers and pull away from the surface of the holder, but I was victorious! I let it dry for about 10 minutes then applied the Mod Podge to completely seal it. I trimmed the edges when fully dry.

I'm quite pleased that the detailed etchings of the fins and eyes are still visible. The 'new' napkin holder adds a nice splash of color.

What have you re-purposed or recycled lately?
Please feel free to share in the comments below. I am always looking for new ideas!

A Quick Visit in 2015

Doh! I meant to post this a month ago but I forgot about it being in my drafts folder.

Our oldest son came in for a quick visit two weeks before Christmas. Even though we would have liked it to have been longer, we are thankful for time together! He was pretty exhausted his first day back so no plans were made to do anything other than sit on the deck and relax. And the weather cooperated! I think this was his first view of the bay from our temporary home. He's saying something like, "Wow. This is a pretty good view." :-)

It was a gorgeous day! The temps were warm and apparently perfect for sailing.

This was a particularly fun trio to watch. They looked like they were having a blast zipping around out there, showing off those colorful sails! All in all, it made for an entertaining afternoon.

But the best part was just sitting across from our son and treasuring the moments spent with him, no matter how short. I'm learning to be thankful for the morsels that God allows to fall my way and not be greedy. One day (or six in our case) is better than none. It gave us an opportunity to talk about lots of things. Military life and its challenges, and all the changes that recently occurred in our family were top on the list. We were able to talk about the importance of our faith in Christ through it all.
Sweet moments!

Romans 1:8-12 (NASB) Bible Gateway
First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, because your faith is being proclaimed throughout the whole world.  For God, whom I serve in my spirit in the preaching of the gospel of His Son, is my witness as to how unceasingly I make mention of you, always in my prayers making request, if perhaps now at last by the will of God I may succeed in coming to you.  For I long to see you so that I may impart some spiritual gift to you, that you may be established;  that is, that I may be encouraged together with you while among you, each of us by the other’s faith, both yours and mine.

Blog Hop & Guest Post from Carrie Fancett Pagels, author of Lilacs for Juliana + GIVEAWAY!!! Open Internationally for an eBook

~UPDATE: GIVEAWAY FOR THE PAPERBACK OR EBOOK COPY HERE ON STUFF & NONSENSE HAS ENDED~

Secondary Characters – Rheumatoid Arthritis

When I recently wrote the third book in The Christy Lumber Camp Series, Lilacs for Juliana, I knew I wanted the heroine’s mother to suffer from a chronic illness. Mrs. Nora Beauchamps had her last child in her forties, like me, and I decided to “give” her Rheumatoid Arthritis, like I have.

Portraying Mrs. Beauchamps was a little tricky. She was almost 70, an age I haven’t yet approached. But I tried to imagine how her condition may have progressed to the point that she wasn’t active during the time my heroine, her daughter Juliana, was home. So I had Mrs. Beauchamps sleeping in during the morning and I had her fairly stiff at night and usually unable to cook. But—there is great variability on any given day for most people with an autoimmune disorder.  So I have Nora enter a time when her symptoms improve.  Early on  in the book, I imply that Juliana may not understand just what all her mother still is able to do. In Juliana’s mind, her mother is a complete invalid—but she is not. Both Mrs. Beauchamps and Juliana’s sister, Claudette, who suffers from Lupus, regularly harvest fruit and make jams and jellies that sell well at the mercantile in town. One reason I wanted to show my twenty-something year old Juliana as not understanding her mother’s capabilities is because this often happens in families.

Although Rheumatoid Arthritis is quite different from Osteoarthritis, I chose to show Mrs. Beauchamps as having a mild to moderate form of the illness that has not affected her organs. The disease can be life threatening if it attacks organs such as the heart. However, I chose not to complicate the plot of the book by showing anything other than that which would move the plot forward for my hero and heroine.

By the way—my heroine’s mother LOVES my hero, Richard Christy—and I hope you will, too!

Carrie is offering ONE copy of a paperback or eBook to a USA winner, or an eBook to an INTERNATIONAL winner!!!

To be entered, leave a comment below answering Carrie's question:

Do you have a family member with arthritis? Have you read any books where you felt this disorder was particularly well shown in the novel?

A Super Moon, Sunrise, and Life

Hey Y'all! It's been CrAzY busy (that might be a favorite phrase of mine) with our move to VA. Lots of life changes. We've become empty nesters after 32 years of having a child in the home. Well, actually WE had to leave home to get this way. ;-) Our youngest son is still living in our family home in NC with his cousin for a room mate. Oh yeah. Two young men on their own for the first time. Big changes ALL the way around!!!

I managed to dig out my camera in anticipation of last night's Super Moon and Lunar Eclipse. Well, too much cloud cover and high winds made it challenging to get a good shot. Add to that my own exhaustion and impatience, and needless to say the photos didn't come out too good. I didn't stay up late enough to get any of the eclipse but I honestly think it would have been solid clouds by then because we ended up getting rain again.

God's handiwork is beautiful despite my meager attempt to capture it! I know many folks got the perfect glimpse of the night sky. My husband and I enjoyed standing on our balcony overlooking the Chesapeake Bay and dreaming of all the adventures to come our way on this next step in our journey.

And then there are the gorgeous sunrises! I have always enjoyed seeing the sunrise over the foothills in NC and especially from our back deck that overlooked our chicken coop. Always a great way to start the morning, listening to the rooster crow and the 'girls' clucking away, letting me know they are giving me a gift (eggs). :)

I still have to pinch myself to believe that He moved us from the foothills of NC to the coast of VA. I honestly thought we would never move!

While I do miss my little hobby farm, now I get to hear the roar and power of the ocean, which always makes me stand in AWE of GOD and his great power!!! Long walks and combing for seashells is fast becoming a part of my day.

Matthew 4:19

And He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men."

My prayer is that the Lord will use my husband and I to be a beacon of light to all those we come in contact with. We are so thankful for our friends and family who have cheered us on!

As time permits, and more boxes get unpacked, I'll be back with some book reviews, giveaways, photography excursions and general life happenings.

Blessings from VA,

Psalm 16:11
You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.

Golden hues

A recent sunset in rural NC.

I know it seems a little early to post an image that looks so much like autumn but I promise I took this just the other day. There was a breathtaking sunset as my husband and I were driving home from our anniversary dinner. He graciously pulled over so I could take a picture of what our Lord painted for our good pleasure.

Red and White

I fell off the blog wagon this past week but I have a post coming soon to explain why. For today, I thought I'd share another great barn on one of the lesser traveled roads around here.

A big red and white barn that no matter what angle I tried to get a shot from, this red Crepe Myrtle was always in the frame. It adds a touch of something to the image, just not sure what.
But I like it. :-)

The Nearly Perfect Plant

I've been a bit absent from blogging as I took a trip to FL last weekend to spend some time celebrating the upcoming arrival of a new 'great' niece. There was lots of food, fun and fellowship accompanied by much laughter, and a wee bit of stepping in the big Atlantic Ocean at sunset.

When I came home, my husband and son had put this beautiful fountain in the front yard.

One of the plants I will be transplanting into the garden area around the fountain is Sedum, so I thought I would share a picture of some I took a photo of last year.
